Frances Gerald Freeland "Jerry" to those that loved and knew him, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 25, 2017. He was 89 years old.
A life time resident of Canisteo, NY he was recently staying at the Bridgewater Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Binghamton, NY these last few weeks to be closer to his immediate family.
Jerry was born at the Minnie Whiting private hospital in Canisteo, NY on April 26, 1928 to the late John Glenn Freeland and Lula Edna (Prentice) Freeland. On November 12, 1960 he married Helen (Burhans) Freeland who preceded him on March 29, 2011. He was also predeceased by a Nephew Donald Johnson. Jerry retired from the N.Y.S DOT.
He is survived by his Sister and Brother in law Eleanor and Gerald Williams of Oxford, NY. A niece and two nephews along with their families, Vickie (James) Fergus of Greene, NY, Steven Johnson of Florence KY and David (Christine) Johnson of Johnson City, NY. Many other family and friends of the Canisteo community also survive.
Jerry was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was inducted into service September 26, 1950 in Rochester, NY. After basic training with the 278th Infantry Regimental Combat Team then stationed at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. He volunteered for mechanic's helper duties in the motor pool and ran training films for the company. In July 1951 he was shipped to Japan on the "General Patrick". After a week in Camp Drake Japan, Jerry was flown to Korea and joined communications of the 6th Tank Battalion. He was operator of a field telephone switch board and telephone line repairman, and besides other guard duties volunteered to run movies for the battalion. Jerry had a love of movies and running a projector was a skill learned while growing up living over the Canisteo theater that his parents owned. After five months in Korea, Jerry was stationed at Camp Fuji near the Tokyo and Yokohama area, later going to Camp McNair Japan. In 1952 he separated from the Army and was placed in the reserves and received an honorable discharge from services on October 22, 1956.
Jerry was an avid train enthusiast as his father worked as an electrician for the Erie Railroad. Jerry would go "train watching" and enjoyed travel by train with his wife Helen to visit her family in California. Jerry also enjoyed photography as a hobby and took every opportunity to take pictures of places that he had journeyed to. Jerry was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canisteo and a faithful servant of God.
The family will be present to receive friends on Saturday December 30th from12pm-1pm at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce Street Canisteo, NY. Funeral Services will immediately follow. Reverend Jim Patton will be officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery Canisteo, NY.
