Francis F. Bender, 84, of 2280 County Route 109, passed away Wednesday (November 25, 2009) at his home.
Born in Susquehanna, PA, July 25, 1925, the son of Jefferson O. and Fahy Teeter Bender, he had resided in Hornell since about 1932, He had served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp, and had been employed at the former Erie and Erie Lackawanna Railroads as well as Conrail prior to his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Hornellsville Lodge #44 F&AM, Canisteo American Legion Post #846, the Hornell American Legion Post #440, The Hornell VFW, member and past commander of the Marine Corp League, and a member and past patron of Ivanhoe Chapter #160, Order Of Eastern Star.
He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Beatrice Blodgett and Norma Bender as well as 2 brothers, LaVerne and Howard Bender.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Bender to whom he was married 63 years, 3 daughters, Frances Teresa(Gary) Melvin of Hornell, Sue Ann Martin of Union Hill, Mary Fay Johns of Pittsford, 4 sons, David(Annie) Bender of Hornell, Daniel Bender of Webster, Dennis (Debra) Bender of Apalachin, Duane (Linda) Bender of Adams, 8 Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren as well as nieces & nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from3PM - 7PM Saturday at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where funeral services will be held on Sunday, at 2 PM with Rev. Michael Childs officiating. .An American Legion Memorial Service will follow the funeral at 2:30 PM. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
