Ernest G. Hawkins, 74, of 1505 Slate Creek Road, defeated cancer on April 11, 2011, when he went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his family.
Born in Hornell, January 10, 1937, the son of Roy and Alberta Knight Hawkins, he had resided in the Town of Hartsville most of his life. Ernest was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Stewart, on July 6, 1957, and faithfully cared for her during her battle with cancer.
He cherished his time with his family. He loved raising beef cattle and was known for his large, beautiful gardens. He generously shared the vegetables he produced with family and friends. Ernest was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed going camping with his family. He leaves a legacy of strong family values, faith in God, a love for animals and a strong work ethic.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Barbara in 2009, his daughter Jeanne Hapeman in 2011, and his brother, Richard Hawkins.
He is survived by his son, Timothy(Betsy) Hawkins of Oakfield, son-in-law, Brian Hapeman of Hornell, his daughters, Suzan (George) Askins of Canisteo and Julie (Don) Karns Jr. of Hornell, his sister, Joyce Burguess of Corning, his brother, Nelson Hawkins of Rochester, sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte (Reed) Andrews of Canisteo, brother-in-law, Lewis "Bud" (Karen) Stewart of Utah, special friend, Dolores Houghtaling of Hornell, 8 grandchildren, Johanna Hawkins, Steven Hawkins, David Askins, Karlie (Aaron) Burns, Hannah Hapeman, Bethany Hapeman, Joshua Karns and Katie Karnes, 3 great grandchildren, Noah and Jonah Burns, Amelia Burns, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will be present to receive friends from 3-7PM Friday at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM, Rev. Daniel Pickering and Rev. Ed Crandall officiating. Burial will be in Bennetts Creek Cemetery.
