Ernest O. "Ernie" Baker, 73, of 5870 County Route 29, passed away suddenly Saturday afternoon (January 8, 2011) at his home.



Born in Howard, March 22, 1937, the son of the late James and Mable Houghtaling Baker, he grew up in Canisteo and attended Canisteo Central School. He served his country as a member of the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Ernie was employed for 20 years at Craig Developmental Center. For one year, Ernie and his wife Jackie operated the former Scott's Dairy Bar in Canisteo. Ernie enjoyed farming, his large gardens, mowing his lawn, cooking, and going for long rides. He especially enjoyed his grand puppy "Nikki", his son's 3 year old Dachshund.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canisteo for many years., and the American Legion.



On April 6, 1958, he married the former Jacqueline "Jackie" Griffith, and together celebrated 52 long years together.



He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Charles Baker and half sister, Nancy Lehman Sanford, mother and father in-law, Luella and Shirley Evans.



He is survived by his wife Jackie, his son, James (Diane) Baker of Mt. Morris, special sister-in-law, Sharon (Jim) Claire of Hornell, sister-in-law, Nancy Coe of Livonia, and brother-in-law Ira Evans of Canaseraga, several nieces, nephews, including Sue Brewster of Hornell, Larry Stephens of Hornell and Bonny (Willis) Brown of Canisteo.

The family will be present to receive friends from 1PM to 4PM Wednesday at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services and military honors will follow calling hours at 4 PM. Rev. Donald Maynard will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
