Enola West Caruso

Hornell

On November 27, 2010 Enola West Caruso was granted her final wish and joined her beloved husband of 61 years Richard Joseph Caruso in God's Kingdom. After 92 years she left this world peacefully in her sleep at the Hornell Gardens, surrounded by her loving children.

Enola was born October 3, 1918 in Britton, South Dakota. She lived in Kinneyville, PA, Andover, NY, West New York, NJ, and lastly made her home in Hornell. Early employment included "live in babysitter and house keeper for families in Andover and Hornell. She was a cashier in the Andover Market Basket and at Lablaws in Hornell. While working at her mother's grocery store "Mary's Market" she met the love of her life "Richie."

Enola was a loving wife and mother. She was a wonderful cook. Family and friends were always welcome in her home, where there was always an abundance of food and room for one more at her table. She was a multi-talented wife, mother, and business woman. Together with Richie they established Richard Caruso Produce. Her primary role was bookkeeper and occasional bill collector. In the early sixties Enola turned her love for knitting into a successful business opening "The Knit Shop" at her home on 124 River Street. She enjoyed operating her shop until the mid eighties at which time she and Richie retired. They became "Snow Birds" enjoying time with family and friends in Port Richy, Florida. Enola loved her summers at the family cottage on Loon Lake, where she was an avid fisherman. She takes with her many memories of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with whom she loved to spend time with at the lake.

Three years ago Enola decided to make her home at Hornell Gardens and make it she did. She brought with her many things from her home on River Street including her cat. Her room was decorated with love, and as at home, everyone was always welcome. Her pantry was never empty and she continued to feed and entertain us all. She took joy in completing and decorating her room with her many puzzles. Enola made many new friends and flourished in her new home. Enola's hand and mind were never idle. She was an avid reader, bingo player, and enjoyed playing cards. She spent countless hours enjoying playing games with her family.

Enola had a passion for life that did not diminish with age. She was a tenacious woman, admired by her family, and friends for her strength and stamina through hard times. Enola was a remarkable woman and leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. Her countless stories and frank honesty will always be remembered by all whos lives she touched. She loved her family as they loved her. She is greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
