Elizabeth E. "Betty" McDowell, 84, formerly of Sawyer Street Site, passed Wednesday (May 31, 2017) at the Livingston County Nursing And Rehab Center, Mt. Morris, NY.



Born in Hornell, NY, October 6, 1932, a daughter of Ziby F. and Catherine G. O'Riley McDowell, she had resided in Hornell and Arkport for most of her life. Betty was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann's Church. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxillary of the VFW and of the American Legion in Arkport. Betty was an avid crocheter and made many hats, gloves and scarves for her grandchildren; she also made lap quilts for RSVP. Betty was employed at the former Loblaws, Marion Rohr, Stearn and Stearn Textiles and retired as a bus driver from the Hornell Area Transit Authority, "HAT" Bus.



She was predeceased by her parents, 4 sisters; June Shannon, Shirley Patrizi, Lina Busse and Fairnon Branche, 4 brothers; Francis, William and Ziby Robert McDowell and James Mattice, as well as 2 infant daughters; Fairnon and Rosalee.



She is survived by 4 daughters; Sue (David) Kuhn of Dansville, Ray Etta (Michael) McLean of Rochester, Nancy (Scott) Evans of Hornell and Cindy (Steve) Burley of Dansville, 1 brother Dale McDowell of Nunda, 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Monday (June 5, 2017) from Noon until 2 PM and 4:30 until 5:15 PM at which time a memorial service by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will take place followed by the Ladies of the American Legion at 5:30 with Funeral services being held at 6PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
