Elijah (Red) Flint of 64 Pine Street, Hornell, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025. Elijah was born in Jasper, New York on June 4, 1934. He was one of 13 children born to Earl F. and Marie M. Welch Flint.
Red was predeceased by his parents, his beautiful daughter Tammy Leah Flint, who fought a courageous battle with lupus, and his wife Barbara who was the love of his life. Barbara and Elijah were married for 61 years before her passing on November 30, 2021. He was also predeceased by his son Richard, an infant boy who died at birth, his sisters Bessie (Emery) Peters, Madeline (Tom) Cassivino , and Sharon (John) Gibbons, his brothers Earl ( Sandy), Arnold (Mary), Ronnie, and Dale (Rosemarie).
Elijah is survived by his sisters, Jeanette (Chuck) Gavitt and Marlene (Denny) Friends; brother Duane (Sue), daughter Bonita (Brent) Reynolds and his loving granddaughter Sadie Flint Bauman. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him, a special nephew Joe Flint who spent time with him, and nephew Les York and wife Cindy who helped care for Barbara. Elijah was also survived by four brothers-in-law and 9 sisters-in-law, especially Donna Kull who selflessly helped in so many ways. Also special friends Karen Schu, Erin McInerney, Lori Deebs and neighbor Ray Vosberg.
Elijah was a four year Navy veteran who was a torpedo man on the submarines of the SS Cobia and SS Cubera. He was a member of the Hornell American Legion, Moose Lodge, and the AmVet Association. Barbara and Elijah owned and operated the Glenwood Restaurant for several years. Elijah and his brother Earl ran the Hornell Racetrack and also the Flint Brothers Tree Service and Trucking Company. He worked construction for many years as a Union Operator for the Local 832 Operating Engineers. Red will be remembered as one of the finest heavy equipment operators in the area.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday (February 11th, 2024) from 12-2pm at Bender-Brown and Powers Funeral Home 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell, with a Funeral Service at 2pm with Deacon Bob McCormick Officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery, Town of Fremont.
