Edward C Wakefield born August 15, 1921, to Andrew and Anna Reitz Wakefield, on Peavy Road in the Town of Angelica, passed away Friday (February 19, 2010) at Cuba Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong Angelica resident making his home at 24 South Street. On January 30, 1953 he married Eleanor Bixby Wakefield and enjoyed 57 loving years together. Ed graduated from Wilsonian School Class of 1938, was a member of the Angelica United Methodist Church, the American Legion Hill-Warner Post 414, Cuba VFW, Cuba AMVETS, and past master of the Angelica Grange #1087, and current member of the Cuba Grange. He retired from Acme Electric in 1988. He was proud to be a part of the citizen group CCAC. They fought and successfully prevented the New York State Nuclear Waste Siting Commission from establishing a Nuclear waste dump in Allegany County. He loved gardening, railroading, clocks, making maple syrup, leek sandwiches, Ford cars and seeing Ford in victory lane on Sundays. He especially loved his family, his Angelica family and being an American. He was a true patriot! He served his country during World War II from August 1942, to January 1946 in the European Theater of Operations. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the 9th Air Force, 416th Bombardment Group of the United State Army Air Corps.
He was predeceased by his parents his brother William "Bud" Wakefield in 1994, his sister Grace Rease in 2001, and son in law Robert "Bob" Appleby in 1999.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor, son Alan Wakefield of Angelica, daughter Linda Appleby of Cuba, 2 grandsons Aaron (Shannon) Appleby, Todd Appleby and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be present 2-4 & 7-9PM Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Ave., Angelica, where Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Tim Middleton officiating. Burial will be in Until the Day Dawn Cemetery, Angelica.
