Edna M. Smith, 78, formerly of
26 Ransom Street, passed away Thursday (October 2, 2008) in Absolut Care Center in Houghton, NY.
Born in North Hornell, September 27, 1930, the daughter of Aaron J. and Lillian CapleCole, she had been a lifelong area resident. Edna graduated from Angola HighSchool, and later graduated from SUNY Geneseowith a teaching degree. She had taught in Alfred Almond, Arkport, and Canisteo School Districts, and later was incharge of teaching at the Hornell ARC for many years, and had a great love andaptitude for each resident. Edna was a former member of the Spencer United Methodist Church,a current member of the Hornell United Methodist Church, where she wasactive in Sunday School teaching, and enjoyed singing in the choir of which shehad a beautiful alto voice.
She was predeceased by her husband Russell in 1992, her sonEdward Smith in 2002, and her sister Betty Gratto Smith.
She is survived by daughter Carolyn Daniels of King George,VA, her son Brian Smith of Locust Grove, VA, her sister Marcia (Rev. Charles)Hakes of TX, 2 brothers Rev. James (Betty) Cole of Illinois, and Robert Grattoof Michigan, grandchildren Steven (Heather) Daniels, Janice Marie (Jay)Tiedeck, great granddaughter Eleanor Hope Tiedeck, nephews Jason Hakes, andniece Liana Hakes.
The family will be present Monday (October 6, 2008) from 2-4 & 6-8pm, at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell,where Funeral services will be held at8:00pm, with the Rev. Richard Dowd officiating.Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
