Earl D."Doc" Coleman, 86, longtime Hornell businessman passed away Monday (February 5, 2018) at Updykes Willow Ridge Comfort Care following a prolonged illness.



Born in Wellsville, August 13, 1931, the son of James and Saraphine Sweeney Coleman, he had resided in Hornell most of his life. Doc was a graduate of Hornell High School.



At age 15, Doc went to work for Alan Loohn at Loohn's Dry Cleaners and Launderers and eventually assumed ownership. He owned and operated the business until his retirement. Following his retirement, Doc spent several years in Florida and South Carolina.



Doc was a member of Our Lady of The Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Hornell. He had also been a member of the Hornell Rotary Club, the Hornell Chamber of Commerce, and the Hornell Elk's Lodge.

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife; Shirley Leyman Coleman, his brother; Robert Coleman, sister Mary Coleman Raish, and his brother-in-law Thomas Raish.



He is survived by his wife; Wilda Newell Coleman, his daughter; Dawn (Wilbur) Dowdle of Hammondsport, three sons; Gary (Rita) Coleman of Horseheads, James "Jay" (Ann) Coleman of Hornell and Sean (Karen Connors) Coleman of Florida, Four step children; Jannette (Anthony) Thompson, Jeffery (Amie) Amidon. Brenda Amidon, and Ward Amidon Jr, 12 grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 8 Step Great Grandchildren, his sister-in-law; Joan Coleman of Hornell, several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present on Friday (Feb. 9, 2018) from 6 PM until 8 PM at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where Funeral services will be held following calling hours at 8 PM. Deacon Robert McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
