E. Catharine Yoder passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Steuben County Health Care Facilty where she had been a resident since 2008. Born August 29th, 1919 in Cleveland Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Grace (Duty) Billman. In 1947 she and her husband Charles (pre-deceased 1997) purchased the Willow Bend Farm on Route 36 in Canisteo. During the late 1950's to mid- 1960's Catherine was best known for serving some of the best home-cooked comfort food in the "Valley" while she owned and operated the Dutch Inn in Canisteo NY. During that same time she and her husband owned a franchise for Ace travel trailer. Catharine made many trips alone through the New Hampshire and Vermont mountains while hauling these trailers from the Alfred, Maine factory back to Canisteo. There were few things that scared her and many things she did extraordinarily well.
Catharine was not only a great cook, but she was truly a farmer's daughter. Should you have the chance to walk with her, she could tell you the name of nearly every flower and plant growing wild and how to use it for food or medicinal purposes. She drove tractor, raised chickens and, while she was three months pregnant with her son, bagged one of the biggest deer ever taken in the area.
Catharine was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in many capacities including that of Relief Society President and often conducted church home-making classes ranging from food storage to genealogy. She served two full-time missions with her husband, first in California and again nine years later as a Temple Worker at the LDS Temple in Toronto, Canada. Short of her faith, there was nothing more important to her than her children and the resulting generations of progeny, all from whom the strong foundation of her devoted love will be sorely missed. At the time of her death Catharine had six lines of five generations in her family.
She is survived by her son, Charles Yoder, Jr. of Canisteo; daughters Patricia (Allan)Gassett of Rochester, Deanna Ertz-berger of Arizona, Donna Lucas of Utah and Kathryn Boccia of Canisteo; 31 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren; her brother David "Buster" (Ruth) Billman and sister Doris (Lawrence) Quinton both of Pennsylvania. In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by her daughter Janet (Duane "Coz") Pierce of Tennessee and sister LaRue (Heister) Linn of Pennsylvania.

Calling hours will be Tuesday March 6th from 6 - 8 at Brown and Power Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St. Canisteo NY. Memorial services will be held March 7th at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Oak Hill Lane in Arkport NY with burial immediately following at the Canisteo Woodlawn Cemetery.
