Obituary

Lois Dungan, 96, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on February 1, 2026, in Brunswick, Georgia. Lois was born to Howard and Myrtie (Shay) Benning on December 10, 1929, in North Hornell. Lois worked at the Arkport State Bank and Arkport Central School for several years. In 1971 Lois and Bruce felt called by God to mission work at the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf in Jamaica, West Indies. They intended to stay for two years, but ended up staying for seventeen years. Upon returning to Arkport, they established Christian Deaf Ministries, which continued to encourage and share the Gospel with the deaf in the United States and the Caribbean islands.

Lois was well-known in the area as a gifted pianist. She was a church pianist since the age of sixteen, and was still playing at Hillside Baptist Church, where she was a member, until her recent decline in health. She was the pianist for over twenty years at Odosagih Bible Conference during their summer programs. She had also played for Area Youth for Christ and the Mandeville, Jamaica, Keswick Convention in the past. Lois made several piano CDs, and also wrote two books about her experiences as a missionary in Jamaica and her work with the deaf.

Lois was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Bruce, and a sister, Carol Auckland.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Hoffmann (Glenn) of Brunswick, GA, and her son Dan Dungan (Vonnie) of Belleville, PA. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Patrick Hoffmann( Jen), Lisa Oliver (Michael), Jessica Koneful (Mike), Joshua Dungan, and Ben Dungan (Yesenia). Lois has eleven great-grandchildren: Haley, Micah, Trinity, Isaiah and Gideon Hoffmann; Keagan, Logan, Jordan, and Roman Oliver; David and Noah Dungan. She is also survived by her brother Allan Benning (Janet Ruth) of Bath and her sister, Janet Marquardt (Gustav) of Acworth, GA, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 2:30 pm at Hillside Baptist Church in Hornell. There will be calling hours from 12:30 to 2:30 pm prior to the service. Burial will be in Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport.
