Derrick J. Smith July 7, 2008 - November 8, 2025

In the early morning of Saturday November 8, 2025, Derrick J. Smith, 17, of Canisteo, NY, passed away in the town of Wellsville, NY. Born on July 7, 2008, in Hornell, NY, Derrick brought energy and spirit to every corner of his life. Derrick attended the Canisteo School District through the 10th grade and was actively working toward earning his GED while working part time at Taco Bell. His determination to continue his education reflected a strong will and a desire to shape his own path forward. A true lover of the outdoors, Derrick found joy in nature and adventure. He had a passion for fishing, camping, and hunting-activities that allowed him to connect with the world around him. Whether it was riding minibikes, go-carts, four-wheelers, or snowmobiles, Derrick was always on the move. His free-spirited nature made him a familiar sight outdoors, often tinkering with engines or exploring new trails. He had an innate curiosity and hands-on approach that kept him engaged with the things he loved most.

Derrick's vibrant presence will be deeply missed by his family: his mother Danielle Smith; sister Imogene Smith; brother DeShawn Smith; grandfather Eric Thomas; uncle Eric Kennell and cousins Eric Kennell Jr., Preston Kennell, and Marie Kennell; aunt Yvonne Thomas and cousins Dominic Riker, Cameron Riker, Rhylee Riker, and Logan Riker; father Robert Freeman; along with many other relatives who held him dear. He now joins his grandmother Robin Laughlin and brother Dominique Smith in rest.

Calling hours will be on Friday (November 14, 2025) from 4-6pm at the Canisteo Wesleyan Church, 25 Greenwood Street Canisteo NY 14823, where a funeral service will be held on November 14, 2025 at 6pm.
