Bessie J. Wolfanger, 81, formerly of Madison Ave., went to be with her Lord on Monday (April 26, 2010) at the Hornell Gardens.
Born in North Hornell, June 28, 1928, the daughter of John and Bertha Chriscaden Stephens, she had resided in Swain for nearly 20 years prior to returning to Hornell in 1976. She received her nurses aide training from St, James Mercy Hospital and worked at the former Mullen Nursing Home in Canisteo. She was later employed on the cafeteria staff at St. James. She was a member of the Hornell Corp of the Salvation Army as well as the League of Mercy and the Home League at the Corp. She was the organist for the Corp for several years.
She was predeceased by her parents, 2 sons, John and Lee Wolfanger, and her brother, Gerald Stephens.
She is survived by her husband, Leon Wolfanger whom she married March 18, 1951, 3 daughters, Sarah (Randy) Spencer of Dalton, Ada (Allen) Donahue of Caledonia, and Florence Ellis of Hornell, 2 sons, Leon (Sharon) Wolfanger of Red Creek and Earl ( Lynn Stoddard) Wolfanger of Almond, her sister-in-law, Harriett Zbech of Sinclairville, several grand and great grandchildren.

The family will be present to receive friends from 2 - 4 PM Saturday at the Bender - Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell where funeral services will be held following calling hours at 4:00 PM. Charles Robards will officiate. Burial will be in Canaseraga Cemetery.
