Barrett George Potter, passed away Wednesday (October 22, 2008) in hospice care at St. James Mercy Hospital following a lengthy battlewith Parkinson's disease. Born in Cortland, in 1929, hecame to Alfred in 1959 and retired from Alfred State College after 33 years ofservice. He held a BA and MS inEducation degrees from Hobart College, an MA fromCornell and a PhD from the State University of New York Buffalo.
Prior to coming to Alfred, he taught at Hobart and SUNY atNew Paltz. He also served as an adjunct professor at Elmira College,RIT and Alfred University.
Potter was the author of fifty articles, reviews andconference presentations on topics ranging from conservation and engineering,to Sherlock Holmes and musicians. He wasan Alfred Village Trustee for nineteen years, as well as trustee for severallocal organizations and a member of the Alfred Almond Board of Education. Hewas Chairman of the General Education Department at Alfred State College forsix years.
Well known as a musician, Potter was a life member of theAmerican Federation of Musicians, had performed with jazz groups, concert andmarching bands, drum corps, and symphony orchestras. He was also a member ofthe Masons and Elks.
Barrett's final accomplishment was the publication of abook; "From Roofs to Rockets and Beyond,Ceramic Engineering and Material Science at Alfred University 1900-2000", whichwas completed just prior to his death.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beverly, a sonBarrett Jr. (Kelly), a daughter Heather (Louis) Mattos,and five grandchildren; Colin, Emma and Grace Potter, Sara and Christopher Mattos.
There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the Alfred Rural Cemetery at the family'sconvenience. Family and friends areinvited to attend a Memorial Service at the Union University Church on Tuesday at 3PM. Rev. Laurie DeMott will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributionsmay be made to the Union University Church, Alfred, NY14802, or the Allegany County SPCA.
