Barbara Potter, 59, died Friday Feb. 1st at theVincent House Comfort Care Facility in Wayland, surrounded by her lovingcaregivers and her sister, Pam. Her brave fight against cancer over the last 3years will be remembered by many.
Born in Roanoke,Va., Barbara lived in WashingtonD.C.and the eastern shores of Md.most of her adult life. She moved to Hornell in 2004 to be near family, and wasdiagnosed with lung cancer shortly thereafter. Despite her short time in thearea, Barbara touched the lives of many locally. She volunteered briefly at theHornell Humane Society and was a regular "book browser" at the Hornell Library.Barbara was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell and will bemissed by her friends from Faith in Action and the Vincent House. She issurvived by her sister Pamela Bowden, brother in law Les Bowden, and nephewBradley Bowden of South Dansville, as well asan uncle in Binghamton,and cousins in Va.,and Hawaii.
Prior to moving to Hornell, Barbara was a successful writerand editor of grant proposals, primarily in the field of mental health. Earlierin her career, she worked directly with various companies in the WashingtonD.C.area, supervising and developing mental health programs. Barbara graduated from Cedar Crest Collegein Allentown, PA., majoring in English and theatre andlater received a Masters of Health from John Hopkins University. Following herillness, Barbara worked from home as a representative of "Ecoquest"and an editor for Outskirts Press. Her career was a major source ofsatisfaction in her life and her dedication was an inspiration to many.
In addition to her work, Barbara was deeply committed toanimal welfare and helped numerous neglected and abused animals over herlifetime. The last member of her animal family, her cat, Serena, will be fondlyremembered by friends and volunteers at the Vincent House. In addition toSerena, she has left behind another dog and cat who were adopted by supportive friends in the community.
There will be no calling hours; a Memorial service will beheld at the Christ Eiscopal Church in Hornell at 11am on Fri., Feb. 22nd .Barbara asks that friends makecontributions to continue the loving ministry of the Vincent House PO Box 566Wayland, NY 14572.
