Barbara L. Hawkins, 69, of

1505 Slate Creek Road, went home to herLord and Savior on Thursday (February19, 2009) after fighting a long courageous battle with cancer, abattle she fought with dignity and grace.



Born in Hornell, November 3, 1939, the daughter of Raymond and Helen Mullen Stewart,she resided her early life in Jasper.She was a graduate of Jasper Central Schoolin the class of 1957, and the same year, she married Ernest Hawkins, her highschool sweetheart who she faithfully loved for 58 years.



She dedicated 35 years of service to St. James MercyHospital where she'll be remembered for her listening ear, Encouraging words,poetry, special cookies and being "Mom" to many. She also worked part-time for her dearfriend, Dr. Stephen Greenberg for 17 years. She attended the Bennett's Creek Bible Church and served aschurch organist for several years. Sheloved living the simple country life and putting others first. She leaves herfamily a strong legacy of faith that she not only talked about but lived daily.Her family was her life and she cherished her many friendships. Her greatestwish was that her friends and family would know Jesus Christ as their Lord andSavior.



She was predeceased by her parents and step-sister, Doris.



She is survived by her husband, Ernest Hawkins, herdaughters, Suzan (George) Askins of Canisteo, Jeanne(Brian) Hapeman of Hornell and Julie (Don) Karns Jr. Of Hornell, her son, Timothy (Betsy) Hawkins ofOakfield, her sister, Charlotte (Reed) Andrews of Canisteo, her brother, Lewis"Bud" (Karen) Stewart of Utah, 2 step-brothers, Al (Pat) Calkins of Ohio, PatCalkins of Woodhull, 8 grandchildren; JohannaHawkins, Steven Hawkins, David Askins, Karlie (Aaron) Burns, Hannah Hapemen,Bethany Hapeman, Joshua Karnsand Katie Karns, 2 great grandchildren, Noah andJonah Burns.

The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 &7-9PM Saturday at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6Spruce St., Canisteo where funeral services will be held on Sunday, at 3:00 PM, Rev. Daniel Pickering and Rev. Bruce Cornell, and Rev. Ed Crandall officiating.Burial will be in Bennetts Creek Cemetery.
