Barbara L. Cornell, 77, of 11 Fifth Street, passed away Sunday (October 11, 2009) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Hornell, April 15, 1932, the daughter of Bert and Fannie Doster Sanford, she had resided in Canisteo most of her life except for an 8 year period when she made her home in Virginia. After receiving her GED, she attended Corning Community College and had been employed at a nurses aide at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath, prior to her retirement.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Connie Foxwell and Edna Randall, and her brothers, William, George, John, Fred and James "Pete" Sanford.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy (George) Weakland of Canisteo, and her son, Richard (Jane) Cornell of Florida, 2 sisters, Delores Turner of Bradford and Carol Dininny of Indiana, her brother, Max Sanford of Canisteo, 4 grandchildren, David Weakland, Elysia Day, Cassandra Cornell and Michael Cornell, 6 great grandchildren, MacKenna E. Weakland, Brett D. Weakland, Kaeden N. Weakland, Brittney M. Weakland, Julia M. Day and Emma Schmitt, several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 6 PM - 8 PM Thursday at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo where a Memorial service will following calling hours at 8:00 PM. Bonnie Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo. Friends wishing to send a remembrance, may visit www.brownandpowersfuneralhomes.com . . The family requests the courtesy of no flowers. However, those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Canisteo Fire Dept., or Ambulance Corp., Main Street, Canisteo, NY 14823. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
